As with every series it seems that after they've waded the waters a little bit they always try for an edgy sequel. The second season of The Glades has been confirmed and directors say it's going to be "darker" than the first season. How dark can it possibly get? It's tv after all. To add to the new plot there is going to be a rocky romance story between Jim and Callie. And the drama is as high as ever.
So what? Horror romance drama? That's a new genera. They need to be careful they don't try to do TOO much with this new season. The dark turns might keep your deep audience members in check, but they'll totally be put off by the romance. Visa verse with the more lighthearted audience. Doing polars might not be the best strategy. You've made it through season one, just don't get too cocky with what you try.
For having a show that actually stuck around, A&E is probably all giddy right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWiccrTB4LM
You make a good point about alienating the few loyal viewers that they have by switching the focus of the show. A&E likely is shocked with a bit of success and does not know how to handle this type of show.
ReplyDeletein my opinion, I feel like if something is working for a show and doing well, you shouldnt try switching it up or changing genres or straying to far away from the original season... too many shows have lost followers this way and inevitably wind up being cancelled... though i do understand that in today's tv world, its hard to appeal to everyone and keep a story arc, and come up with new material and be unique... but we shall see
ReplyDeleteIf their not trying to out-do themselves with an "edgy sequel" or spin-off. But i'm pretty sure all spin-offs now are reality show spin-offs... so they don't count.
ReplyDeleteIt also seems like show's need to be uber protective/careful. To me, most shows on TV are already rip-offs of other shows, so if a show like the Glades is going for a new edgy edge, the better double check to see if it will work.
